The Giant Redwood ‘Curley Green’ is a spectacular cultivar of Sequoiadendron giganteum that brings architectural drama and year-round interest to larger gardens. This distinctive variety showcases beautifully twisted, curled foliage in rich blue-green tones, creating an eye-catching textural display that sets it apart from the straight-needled species. The contorted needles spiral around the stems, giving the entire tree a uniquely sculpted appearance that becomes more pronounced as the plant matures.
This particular specimen measures 20-40cm in height and arrives in a generous 5-litre pot, providing an established root system that ensures reliable establishment. Despite its modest current size, this is a true giant redwood with all the majesty and presence the species is famous for, just with added ornamental appeal through its distinctive curled foliage. The thick, fibrous bark develops a rich reddish-brown colour as the tree ages, providing wonderful winter interest and textural contrast against the evergreen foliage.
Giant Redwoods are remarkably well-suited to the British climate, thriving in our mild, moist conditions. They’re incredibly hardy, tolerating temperatures well below freezing, and actually appreciate the regular rainfall that characterises our weather patterns. ‘Curley Green’ performs best in full sun positions where it can develop its characteristic conical form and maintain the best foliage colour, though it will tolerate partial shade in warmer regions.
When planting your Giant Redwood, choose a location with deep, fertile, well-drained soil that won’t become waterlogged during winter months. These magnificent trees develop extensive root systems and require space to reach their full potential, so position them well away from buildings, boundaries, and underground services. They make stunning specimen trees for large gardens, parkland settings, or estate plantings where they have room to develop their full architectural presence.
Care Guide for British Climate
Water newly planted specimens regularly during their first two growing seasons, particularly during dry spells between April and September. Once established, Giant Redwoods are remarkably drought-tolerant, though they appreciate consistent moisture. Apply a generous layer of organic mulch around the base each spring, keeping it clear of the trunk to prevent rot.
Feed annually in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser to support healthy growth. The twisted foliage of ‘Curley Green’ requires no special treatment and maintains its distinctive character throughout the year. Pruning is rarely necessary beyond removing any dead or damaged branches in late winter. The naturally conical form develops without intervention.
Giant Redwoods are exceptionally pest and disease-resistant. Their thick bark provides excellent protection, and the species has few natural enemies in British gardens. Monitor young plants for aphids during spring, though these rarely cause lasting damage. The evergreen foliage provides year-round structure and interest, looking particularly striking when dusted with frost or snow during winter months.
