The Giant Redwood ‘Exceptionally Blue’ is a stunning cultivar of Sequoiadendron giganteum that brings a remarkable twist to the classic Californian giant. This particular selection stands out with its striking silvery-blue foliage that creates an eye-catching focal point in larger gardens throughout the year. The glaucous needles shimmer beautifully in sunlight, providing a cool, frosted appearance that contrasts wonderfully with the rich, fibrous, cinnamon-red bark that develops as the tree matures.
This magnificent conifer forms a perfect pyramidal shape in its youth, with densely packed branches that sweep gently downwards, creating an elegant silhouette. The blue-grey foliage is soft to the touch yet remarkably resilient, maintaining its distinctive colouration through all seasons. As the tree develops, it creates a commanding presence with its straight, columnar trunk and gradually broadening canopy that adds architectural drama to any substantial garden setting.
Growing a Giant Redwood ‘Exceptionally Blue’ is surprisingly straightforward in British conditions, where the mild, moist climate actually suits these majestic trees remarkably well. Despite their Californian origins, they thrive in our cooler, damper weather and are fully hardy throughout the country. This 20/40cm specimen in a 5-litre pot is at an ideal size for establishing quickly, with a well-developed root system ready to anchor itself firmly in its permanent position.
Planting and Position
Choose a sunny, open position with plenty of space for future growth. These trees need deep, well-drained soil that retains moisture without becoming waterlogged. They tolerate most soil types, including clay, loam and sandy soils, provided drainage is adequate. Dig a generous planting hole at least twice the width of the root ball and incorporate organic matter to improve soil structure. Water thoroughly after planting and keep well-watered during the first growing season whilst the roots establish.
Ongoing Care
Once established, Giant Redwoods are remarkably low-maintenance. Water during prolonged dry spells, particularly in the first few years. Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth. No pruning is necessary – simply allow the tree to develop its natural form. The lower branches will gradually die back as the tree matures, which is entirely normal. Mulch around the base each spring with well-rotted compost or bark chips to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping the mulch away from the trunk itself.
These trees are exceptionally wind-tolerant once established and rarely suffer from pests or diseases. The thick, spongy bark becomes increasingly fire-resistant with age, whilst the strong timber can live for thousands of years in optimal conditions. The ‘Exceptionally Blue’ cultivar maintains its superior colouration throughout its life, becoming an increasingly impressive specimen that will be enjoyed by generations to come.
