$24 million land deal creates 7-mile-long Bay Area, USA corridor of protected redwood forests to the ocean

Save the Redwoods League is purchasing a 1,517-acre redwood forest in Sonoma County for $24 million, creating a continuous 7-mile chain of protected redwood parks from mountains to ocean. The property, located near Guerneville and the Russian River, includes 20 miles of trails, meadows, and streams with ocean views.

The land will be added to Monte Rio Redwoods Regional Park and opened to the public by summer 2024. The acquisition connects Sonoma Coast State Park to Monte Rio Redwoods Regional Park and the Bohemian Grove. The property, previously owned by Mendocino Redwood Company, contains mostly second-and-third growth trees, with some old-growth redwoods, and is home to several endangered species.

Funding comes from multiple sources, including $6 million from Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District and $2 million from Sonoma Land Trust, with the remainder to be raised through private donations and government grants.
