California’s ancient redwood trees have demonstrated remarkable resilience following a devastating wildfire in Big Basin Redwoods State Park in August 2020. Despite initial fears that the intense fire, which incinerated even the canopies of 100-meter-tall trees, would lead to widespread tree death, many redwoods survived. A study published in Nature Plants by ecophysiologist Drew Peltier and colleagues revealed the secret behind this survival: the trees tapped into energy reserves created from sunlight decades earlier, stored deep within their trunks. This stored energy allowed the redwoods to revitalize dormant buds beneath their bark, sprouting new life and demonstrating an unexpected ability to recover from severe fire damage.
