Arborist Clones Ancient Redwoods to Combat Climate Change
David Milarch, a Michigan arborist, is leading an extraordinary mission to preserve California’s ancient redwoods through cloning. Through his non-profit organisation, The Archangel Ancient Tree Archive, Milarch and his team collect genetic material from old-growth redwood stumps and living trees, successfully creating clones in their Michigan laboratory.
In 2018, they planted 75 coastal redwood saplings in San Francisco’s Presidio park. This initiative aims to restore the 95% of redwood forests lost since the 1800s whilst contributing to climate change mitigation, as redwoods are exceptional at storing CO2 and can grow up to 10 feet annually.
