Can Broadway Save the Trees?

REDWOOD, a critically acclaimed new Broadway musical starring Tony Award winner Idina Menzel, tells the story of a woman’s transformative journey through a redwood forest. The production, which has earned a New York Times Critic’s Pick, is being praised for its emotional depth, stunning theatrical design, and Menzel’s powerful performance. This limited-run show combines natural themes with Broadway spectacle to create what critics are calling a uniquely moving theatrical experience.

REDWOOD follows Jesse, a grieving mother played by Idina Menzel, who flees across the country after her son Spencer’s death from a fentanyl-laced drug overdose. Unable to process her loss and struggling with her wife Mel’s different approach to grief, Jesse finds solace in a redwood forest where she develops meaningful connections with two arborists and forms a unique bond with a tree. The musical, conceived by Menzel herself alongside Landau, premiered at La Jolla Playhouse in 2024 before making its Broadway debut in February 2025.
