Capturing the Hidden Sounds of Ancient Redwood Forests

Nature sound recordist Thomas Rex Beverly undertook a unique project to capture the intricate soundscape of an ancient redwood forest in California’s Santa Cruz Mountains, using Sennheiser MKH 8000 Series microphones and contact mics both at ground level and high up in the canopy. With support from the Sempervirens Fund, Beverly climbed a protected 1,000-year-old redwood to document sounds at various heights and even the internal ‘crackling’ of water movement within the tree. Employing innovative 3D microphone arrays and enduring challenging conditions, he revealed the rich auditory world of these ancient giants, highlighting the importance of conservation and the remarkable power of high-quality audio equipment in environmental recording.
