Giant Redwood Grove Planted in Rutland After Community Campaign
A new grove of giant redwood saplings has been planted in Rutland, England’s smallest county, following a community campaign lead by Jay Naylor to save historic redwoods threatened by a quarry expansion. After negotiations, quarry owner Heidelberg Materials collaborated with locals and volunteers to establish a new grove of 12 giant redwoods, along with other rare species, on land that will become accessible to the public. The planting, supported by King Charles III, aims to replace trees likely to be lost if the expansion proceeds and honours Victorian landowner Thomas Burroughes, who originally planted the area’s redwoods in the 1800s.
