Coast Redwood – Sequoia sempervirens ‘Xeno’ is a striking cultivar that brings a unique twist to this magnificent species. Unlike the typical Coast Redwood, ‘Xeno’ showcases distinctive blue-tinted foliage that adds an extra dimension of interest to any garden. This special form has been selected for its compact, columnar growth habit, making it more suitable for modern gardens than the species.
The blue-tinged needles are smaller and more densely packed than the standard Coast Redwood, creating a more refined appearance. This architectural form creates a strong vertical accent in the garden while maintaining a manageable size. The foliage holds its striking color throughout the year, providing constant interest and contrast against other plants.
Like its parent species,Sequoia sempervirens ‘Xeno’ has earned recognition from expert growers. It combines the renowned hardiness of Coast Redwood with a more garden-friendly form. The compact nature of this cultivar means it can be incorporated into smaller spaces where the species might be too dominant.
Being part of the UK’s largest redwood collection, our specimens are carefully grown to ensure the best possible start. The upright, columnar form makes ‘Xeno’ perfect for creating architectural features or elegant boundaries. Its blue foliage works beautifully alongside both traditional and contemporary planting schemes.
While mature Coast Redwoods can reach enormous heights, ‘Xeno’ maintains a more controlled growth pattern. It still delivers the majesty of a redwood but in a more compact package. The dense foliage provides excellent year-round structure and can be used to create striking vertical elements in the garden.
Plant ‘Xeno’ in a sunny or partly shaded position in well-draining soil. While hardy once established, young plants benefit from shelter against harsh winds. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. The compact growth habit means less pruning is required than the species. Apply a mulch in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds. In colder areas, consider providing winter protection for young specimens until established.
