The Dawn Redwood is one of the most fascinating trees you can grow in a garden. This beautiful conifer has soft, feathery foliage that creates a lovely bright green canopy throughout spring and summer. The tree grows into a magnificent pyramid shape naturally, creating a striking focal point that brings height and structure to larger gardens.
This ancient species has quite a story to tell. It was thought to be extinct until a small group was found growing in China in 1944. Though it’s now widely planted in gardens throughout the world, it still carries endangered status in the wild, making it a truly special addition to any garden.
Despite its grand appearance, this tree offers so much more than just height. The foliage is particularly special, with delicate needles that move gracefully in the breeze and catch the light beautifully. As autumn approaches, the whole tree turns a wonderful bronze-orange colour before the needles fall, creating a spectacular seasonal display.
In winter, the tree shows off its handsome reddish-brown bark, which peels in long strips to reveal fresh cinnamon colours beneath. The branches form a lovely winter outline, and the overall shape stays neat and tidy without any pruning needed.
It’s important to know that these trees are deciduous, dropping their leaves in late autumn and remaining bare until early spring. This makes them quite different from other redwoods, but offers a wonderful display through the year.
The Dawn Redwood brings a real sense of presence to gardens, with its straight trunk and symmetrical branching pattern creating a natural architectural feature. In spring, the fresh lime-green needles emerge to start the growing season, bringing a feeling of freshness and renewal to the garden.
Plant your Dawn Redwood in moist, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. While it grows well in most soil types, it particularly enjoys rich, slightly acidic to neutral soils. Water regularly when young and during dry spells, though established trees become quite drought tolerant. No regular pruning is needed as it naturally forms an elegant shape. A yearly feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring will keep it growing strongly. The tree is fully hardy throughout Britain but appreciates some shelter from strong winds while young.
