Giant Redwood ‘Greenpeace’ – Sequoiadendron giganteum is a remarkable Dutch-bred cultivar that brings year-round vibrancy to gardens. Unlike many conifers that take on bronze tints in winter, this variety maintains its rich emerald-green foliage throughout the seasons, creating a constant focal point of fresh colour in the landscape.
This handsome tree develops a broad, pyramidal shape that offers presence without the overwhelming size of the species. Growing at roughly half the pace of typical Giant Redwoods, it reaches approximately 4.5 metres in height and 3 metres in width after a decade, making it more suitable for larger gardens and designed landscapes.
What makes this cultivar particularly special is its impressive annual growth rate of around 45cm, allowing gardeners to witness its steady development into a magnificent specimen. The dense, lawn-green foliage creates a solid, architectural presence that works beautifully either as a standalone feature or as part of a carefully planned conifer collection.
The regular, conical form develops naturally without the need for pruning, whilst the consistent green colouring provides a reliable backdrop for other garden plants. Its fresh appearance throughout winter makes it especially valuable when other plants are dormant.
Plant your Giant Redwood ‘Greenpeace’ in well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Whilst adaptable to most soil types, it prefers slightly acidic to neutral conditions. Water regularly when young, particularly during dry spells, though established trees become quite drought tolerant. No regular pruning is needed as it naturally forms an attractive shape. A yearly feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring will keep it healthy. The tree is fully hardy but appreciates some shelter from strong winds while young.
