Metasequoia glyptostroboides ‘Bonsai’

Dawn Redwood

‘Bonsai’ is a cultivar of Metasequoia glyptostroboides that was raised at Rutgers University in New Jersey from a new introduction of Chinese seed and selected by Dr. John Kuser in 1992. While described as a dwarf form by Auders & Spicer (2012), the name ‘Bonsai’ may be somewhat misleading, as the plant can still reach a height of 1 m in ten years, and its ultimate size remains uncertain. However, compared to typical forms of the species, ‘Bonsai’ exhibits significantly reduced vigor. In addition to its compact habit, this cultivar features somewhat glaucous green foliage held on pendant branchlets.
