Sequoia sempervirens ‘Budapest Zoo’

Coast Redwood

‘Budapest Zoo’ is a variegated cultivar of Sequoia sempervirens selected from a specimen growing on the grounds of the Budapest Zoo in Hungary. It was named by Mesterházy in 1987 specifically for its yellow variegation (Auders & Spicer 2012).

The yellow variegation on the foliage is the primary distinguishing feature of ‘Budapest Zoo’, setting it apart from the typical green foliage of the species. Variegated cultivars like this one offer unique ornamental qualities and add visual interest to gardens and landscapes.

The selection of ‘Budapest Zoo’ from a specific location also highlights the potential for finding distinct forms of the species in various cultivated settings, such as zoos, parks, and arboreta. These specimens may have developed unique characteristics due to genetic mutations, environmental influences, or other factors.
