‘Lighting Green’ is a cultivar that was selected before 2000 by Nelis Kools, a nurseryman from the Netherlands. This cultivar is distinguished by its exceptionally bright green young growth, which sets it apart from the typical foliage colour of the species. Auders & Spicer mention that “There is confusion in the trade about the name, but ‘Lighting Green’ is confirmed by the raiser: it refers to the almost neon green of the new growth” (Auders & Spicer 2012).

The vibrant, nearly neon green colour of the new growth is the most striking feature of ‘Lighting Green’. This unique colouration adds a fresh and lively appearance to the tree, particularly during the spring and early summer when new growth is most abundant. As the foliage matures, it is likely to transition to a more typical green colour , but the periodic flush of bright green new growth remains a defining characteristic of this cultivar.

Apart from its distinctive foliage colour , ‘Lighting Green’ is expected to exhibit growth characteristics similar to the typical species, developing into a sizeable tree over time. The eye-catching neon green new growth, combined with the species’ iconic form, makes this cultivar an attractive choice for those seeking to add a striking and unique element to their landscape.
