The 159-year-old Redwood Avenue at Benmore Botanic Garden has reportedly been saved through a conservation exercise to ward off its susceptibility to plant pathogens. When the 49 giant redwoods (Sequioadendron giganteum) started showing signs of distress, curator Peter Baxter and colleagues at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) agreed radical action was required.

A giant 140-year-old redwood tree at a National Trust park was obliterated by a lightning strike. The tree was “left in tatters” in Sheffield Park, east of Haywards Heath, after storms battered Sussex last week. The 38-metre tree was snapped in several pieces but staff hope it could still regrow.
