The Coast Redwood ‘Big Bonsai’ is a truly remarkable cultivar that brings the majestic beauty of California’s towering giants into a garden-friendly form. This exceptional selection of Sequoia sempervirens was originated by Jan Kools in 2002 and introduced by Nelis Kools in Deurne, Netherlands in 2008. What makes ‘Big Bonsai’ particularly special is its extraordinarily compact, upright growth habit that transforms one of the world’s tallest tree species into a manageable garden specimen.
During its first year, ‘Big Bonsai’ grows at a relatively normal pace, but the magic truly begins in the second year when it develops its characteristic proliferous growth pattern. The plant becomes densely clothed in numerous small, delicate leaves that create an incredibly fine-textured appearance reminiscent of a carefully cultivated bonsai specimen – hence its perfectly apt name. This slow, compact growth makes it ideal for smaller gardens, mixed borders, or as a stunning focal point where space is at a premium.
The foliage displays the classic Coast Redwood characteristics with soft, needle-like leaves arranged in flattened sprays. The rich green colour provides year-round interest, maintaining its attractive appearance through all seasons. The bark develops the distinctive reddish-brown hue that gives redwoods their common name, adding textural interest as the plant matures. The overall form is distinctly upright and very compact, creating a neat, architectural presence without the sprawling dimensions of its forest-dwelling relatives.
This 40-60cm specimen arrives in a 5-litre pot, perfectly sized for establishing quickly in your garden. At this size, the plant has developed a robust root system and is ready to settle into its permanent position, where it will provide decades of beauty with minimal intervention.
Care Guide for British Climate
‘Big Bonsai’ thrives in moisture-retentive, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Choose a sheltered position in full sun or partial shade – whilst it tolerates some shade, the best compact growth and foliage density occurs with good light levels. The site should offer protection from harsh, drying winds which can damage the delicate foliage.
Water regularly during the first two growing seasons to establish a deep root system, particularly during dry spells. Once established, Coast Redwoods appreciate consistent moisture and will benefit from mulching around the base to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Apply a layer of organic mulch such as composted bark in spring, keeping it clear of the trunk.
Feed annually in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser to support healthy growth. Pruning is rarely necessary due to the naturally compact habit, but you can lightly trim to shape in late spring if desired. Remove any dead or damaged growth as noticed.
‘Big Bonsai’ is remarkably hardy and well-suited to the British climate, tolerating temperatures well below freezing once established. The naturally high humidity of our climate actually suits this cultivar perfectly, helping to maintain the lush foliage condition.
