The Coast Redwood ‘Kenwood’ is a remarkable cultivar that brings the majesty of California’s iconic redwoods to British gardens with a distinctive twist. Introduced by Stanley & Sons Nursery in Oregon before 2002, this exceptional selection stands out immediately with its striking glaucous foliage—a beautiful bluish-gray to silvery appearance that sets it apart from the typical green needles of standard coast redwoods. This unique colouration creates a stunning focal point in any garden setting, catching the light beautifully throughout the seasons and providing year-round ornamental interest.
What makes ‘Kenwood’ particularly special is its combination of rapid growth and relatively compact habit. While it still develops into an impressive specimen tree, it maintains a more manageable form than the species type, making it better suited to gardens where space is at a premium. The intensity of the glaucous hue varies with growing conditions and foliage age, adding subtle seasonal variations to its appearance. Young growth often displays the most pronounced silvery tones, creating an attractive contrast against older foliage.
This cultivar thrives in British gardens, appreciating our mild, moist climate which mirrors its native coastal Californian habitat. The evergreen nature of Sequoia sempervirens ‘Kenwood’ means it provides structure and colour throughout the year, with its distinctive blue-toned foliage offering a refreshing alternative to traditional green conifers. The soft, feathery needles are arranged in flat sprays, creating an elegant, layered appearance that adds texture and depth to planting schemes.
Care Guide for British Climate
Plant your Coast Redwood ‘Kenwood’ in a sheltered position with moist, well-drained soil. It performs best in full sun to partial shade and appreciates protection from harsh winds, particularly when young. This cultivar tolerates a range of soil types but shows strongest growth in slightly acidic to neutral conditions with good organic content.
Water regularly during the first two growing seasons to establish a deep root system. Once established, ‘Kenwood’ becomes reasonably drought-tolerant, though it appreciates consistent moisture during prolonged dry spells. Mulch around the base with organic matter to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping the mulch away from the trunk itself.
Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser to support the rapid growth rate. Minimal pruning is required—simply remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches in late winter. The naturally pyramidal form develops beautifully without intervention. In exposed gardens, consider staking young specimens until well-established.
‘Kenwood’ is hardy throughout most of Britain, tolerating temperatures well below freezing once established. The glaucous foliage provides good resistance to pests and diseases. Monitor for aphids occasionally, though these rarely cause significant problems. This cultivar’s robust nature and distinctive appearance make it an excellent choice for creating a specimen feature or adding height and structure to larger mixed borders.
