The Coast Redwood ‘Pendula’ Sequoia sempervirens ‘Pendula’ is a truly remarkable weeping cultivar that transforms the towering majesty of the world’s tallest tree species into an elegant, narrow columnar form perfect for gardens. With its gracefully cascading branches and distinctive architectural presence, this extraordinary conifer brings a touch of the Californian coast to British planting schemes whilst remaining far more manageable than its forest giant relatives.
What makes ‘Pendula’ so captivating is its unique growth habit. Unlike the typical conical shape of the species, this cultivar maintains a straight, upright trunk from which first-order branches arch widely downwards in sweeping curves. From these primary branches emerge secondary branchlets that hang in graceful, pendulous curtains, creating a strikingly narrow silhouette that resembles a living fountain of evergreen foliage. The overall effect is both dramatic and refined, offering year-round structural interest that few other conifers can match.
This distinguished cultivar has an impressive heritage, having been raised from seed by the renowned Rovelli Brothers nursery firm in Italy prior to 1899. Its enduring popularity over more than a century speaks to its garden-worthiness and adaptability. The soft, needle-like foliage retains the characteristic rich green colouration of the species, clothing the weeping branches in dense, textured layers that catch the light beautifully throughout the seasons.
In the garden, Coast Redwood ‘Pendula’ serves as a magnificent focal point, whether planted as a standalone specimen or used to add vertical drama to mixed borders. Its narrow, columnar form makes it particularly valuable for smaller gardens where space is at a premium, yet its presence is commanding enough to anchor larger planting schemes. The weeping habit creates wonderful movement, with branches swaying gently in the breeze, adding a dynamic quality to the garden.
This cultivar thrives in the British climate, appreciating our mild, moist conditions. Plant in a sheltered position in full sun or partial shade, ideally in deep, fertile, moisture-retentive soil that drains well. Whilst established plants show reasonable drought tolerance, consistent moisture during the growing season encourages the best growth and maintains the lush appearance of the foliage. Mulching around the base helps retain soil moisture and suppresses competing weeds.
Young plants benefit from protection from harsh winds, which can scorch the foliage and damage the graceful branch structure. Once established, ‘Pendula’ proves remarkably hardy and requires minimal maintenance. Pruning is rarely necessary beyond removing any dead or damaged growth in late spring. If multiple leaders develop, select the strongest central trunk and remove competing shoots to maintain the characteristic columnar form.
Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser to support healthy growth. Water regularly during dry spells, particularly for the first few years after planting. This magnificent weeping redwood rewards patient gardeners with decades of architectural beauty, gradually developing into a truly distinctive garden feature.
