Dawn Redwood ‘Syców’ – Metasequoia glyptostroboides is a distinctive selective variety originating from Poland, celebrated for its exceptional creamy white variegation that sets it apart from the standard green form. This deciduous conifer brings a unique ornamental quality to gardens, with its striking foliage creating a luminous presence throughout the growing season. The variegated needles emerge in spring with pronounced cream and white markings, creating a beautiful contrast against the green portions of the foliage.
This remarkable cultivar keeps the elegant pyramidal shape so typical of Dawn Redwoods, while adding the extra visual interest of its variegated foliage. The soft, feathery needles are arranged in opposite pairs along the branches, creating a delicate texture that becomes particularly eye-catching when backlit by sunlight. As autumn approaches, the foliage transforms into warm tones of bronze, pink, and russet before dropping for winter, revealing the attractive fibrous, cinnamon-coloured bark beneath.
The 80/100cm specimen you receive is a well-established plant in a 5-litre pot, ready to begin its journey in your garden. Despite being a deciduous conifer, Dawn Redwood ‘Syców’ is remarkably fast-growing once established, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a specimen tree with impact. Its adaptability to various soil conditions and tolerance of wet ground makes it particularly versatile, thriving in locations where many other conifers would struggle.
This Polish selection is ideal as a focal point in larger gardens, where it can develop into a magnificent specimen tree. The variegated foliage provides year-round interest, whilst the tree’s deciduous nature means it won’t cast heavy shade during winter months. Plant it where the morning or evening sun can illuminate the creamy variegation, creating a truly special display.
Care Guide
Dawn Redwood ‘Syców’ thrives in moist, well-drained soil and performs best in full sun to partial shade, though the variegation is most pronounced in good light. This tree is exceptionally tolerant of wet conditions and can even grow in boggy areas, making it perfect for planting near ponds or in areas with heavy clay soil that retains moisture.
Plant in a location sheltered from strong winds, particularly whilst the tree is establishing. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and incorporate organic matter to improve soil structure. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain consistent moisture during the first two growing seasons. Once established, the tree is relatively drought-tolerant, though it performs best with regular moisture.
Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth and maintain the vibrant variegation. A mulch layer around the base helps retain moisture and suppress weeds, but keep it clear of the trunk to prevent rot. Pruning is rarely necessary beyond removing any dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter.
Fully hardy and thoroughly at home in the British climate, this tree copes easily with winter temperatures well below freezing. In exposed locations, young specimens may benefit from a windbreak during their first winter. Watch for any shoots that revert to plain green foliage and remove these promptly to maintain the variegated character.
