The Giant Redwood ‘French Beauty’ is a stunning cultivar of Sequoiadendron giganteum that brings architectural grandeur and year-round interest to larger gardens. This magnificent conifer develops a distinctive narrow, pyramidal form with dense, variegated cream & white foliage that creates a striking focal point in any setting. The ‘French Beauty’ selection is particularly prized for its compact growth habit compared to the species, making it more manageable whilst retaining all the majesty associated with these legendary trees.
This remarkable evergreen showcases soft, scale-like foliage arranged in spirals around the stems, creating a lush, textured appearance throughout the seasons. The juvenile foliage emerges in beautiful variegated cream & white foliage tones, maturing to a deeper green whilst maintaining its attractive colour even through winter months. As the tree matures, it develops the characteristic fibrous, reddish-brown bark that becomes deeply furrowed and spongy to the touch – a distinctive feature that adds considerable winter interest and tactile appeal.
The ‘French Beauty’ cultivar is supplied at a young, manageable size of 20-40cm in a 5-litre pot, giving you the opportunity to establish this magnificent specimen in your garden and watch it develop over the years. At this size, the tree has a well-established root system that will help it settle quickly into its permanent position, providing decades of enjoyment for generations to come.
Growing Giant Redwood ‘French Beauty’ in British Gardens
This hardy conifer thrives in British conditions, tolerating our variable climate with ease once established. Plant in full sun to partial shade, though the best foliage colour and most compact growth develops in positions receiving plenty of direct sunlight. The ideal location offers shelter from strong winds, particularly when young, though mature specimens become remarkably wind-tolerant.
Soil requirements are straightforward – ‘French Beauty’ adapts to most well-drained soils including clay, loam, and sandy types. It prefers neutral to slightly acidic conditions but tolerates a range of pH levels. Avoid waterlogged sites as this can lead to root problems. When planting, incorporate plenty of organic matter to improve soil structure and moisture retention.
Water regularly during the first two growing seasons to establish a deep, extensive root system. Once established, Giant Redwoods are surprisingly drought-tolerant, though they perform best with consistent moisture during prolonged dry spells. Apply a generous mulch around the base each spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it clear of the trunk itself.
Feed annually in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser formulated for trees and shrubs. This supports healthy growth and maintains the attractive foliage colour. Pruning is rarely necessary – simply remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter. The natural form is part of this tree’s appeal, so avoid unnecessary shaping.
Giant Redwoods are remarkably pest and disease-resistant, requiring minimal intervention once established. Their thick bark provides excellent protection, and they’re rarely troubled by common conifer problems. This makes ‘French Beauty’ an excellent low-maintenance choice for creating a lasting legacy in your garden.
